Mersin, Turkey – On November 17, 2023, Mersin International Port Management Inc. (MIP), a collaborative venture involving PSA International, Akfen, and IFM, inaugurated the East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) Project with an investment of USD 455 million. The event witnessed the presence of notable figures, including Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, Deputy Governor Ibrahim Küçük, Rear Admiral Murat Fırat, Singapore Ambassador to Turkey Kok Li Peng, MIP Chairman Flemming Dalgaard, city officials, sector representatives, and company executives.
The EMH2 initiative aims to significantly amplify MIP’s terminal in Mersin, elevating its capacity from 2.6 million TEU to 3.6 million TEU. The expansion involves lengthening the quay by 380 meters to a total of 880 meters, featuring a draft of 18 meters. This strategic enhancement enables MIP to concurrently accommodate two Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULVCs) of up to 400 meters. The first phase of EMH2 is anticipated for completion by the first quarter of 2025, with the entire project slated for conclusion by the end of the first quarter of 2026. The project encompasses the acquisition of eight new automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (aRMGs) and four additional ship-to-shore cranes.
Launched under the banner “Together for Mersin,” EMH2 is poised to make significant contributions to the economies of Turkey and Mersin. The project is expected to generate direct employment for 500 individuals and create an additional 5,000 indirect job opportunities. MIP’s partner, the Turkish conglomerate Dougus Group, will oversee the construction of the civil structure for MIP. Simultaneously, MIP shareholders have inked an MOU with the Mersin Tarsus Industrial Zone to establish a logistics park spanning an area of 200,000 square meters.
