On November 3, a new automated entry system was launched at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), marking the next step in the digital transformation of the Contship Italia group terminal. The project was implemented jointly with the Port Authority of Eastern Liguria and an international technology partner. The goal is to speed up, simplify, and make access for trucks to the terminal safer, while simultaneously improving environmental sustainability by reducing waiting times and emissions.
The new infrastructure is equipped with four entry lanes designed for all types of transport, including oversized cargo. The system utilizes high-precision cameras and character recognition (OCR) technology integrated with Gate Operating System software, which interacts with the LSCT Terminal Operating System. This enables automated and highly accurate technical checks. The entry lanes are equipped with interactive kiosks, barriers, scales, traffic lights, and license plate recognition systems, allowing drivers to complete the check-in process independently.
According to Contship CEO Matthieu Gassellin, the project marks “the first step in the innovative development of the La Spezia gateway” and a significant investment in improving the terminal’s efficiency. The new system strengthens LSCT’s position as one of Italy’s key and most technologically advanced terminals, enhancing the competitiveness of the Port of La Spezia and the entire Mediterranean port network.
