DB Cargo, the freight division of German Railways (Deutsche Bahn), has agreed to sell its shares in the Spanish operator Transfesa to Boluda Shipping. As a result of the transaction, Boluda plans to become the second-largest freight rail company in Spain after Renfe Mercancías.
Currently, DB owns approximately 70% of Transfesa, with the remaining 20% owned by Renfe, the national carrier. The company operates a fleet of 3,350 freight cars and 1,000 swap bodies, enabling it to transport a wide range of cargo.
Transfesa is known for its extensive route network both on the Iberian Peninsula and in other European countries, built in partnership with DB Cargo. The acquisition of its shares opens new opportunities for Boluda Shipping to expand its operations in the rail transportation market in Spain and Europe.
