Alstom has signed a contract in Romania for the modernization of the historic Bucharest-Giurgiu railway line, opened in 1869. The total value of the project is approximately €450 million, with Alstom’s share being approximately 25%. The project aims to increase capacity, energy efficiency and reliability of the connection.
The agreement was concluded by the Asocierea RailWorks consortium, created by Alstom and the Romanian company Arcada, with the state-owned operator CFR SA. Over the course of 36 months, 93.45 km of the line connecting Bucharest-Pivnic, Jilava, Giurgiu-Pivnic and the Giurgiu border station will be modernized.
Alstom will implement the ERTMS level 2 system, digital train control and electrification, including the installation of the overhead line. The upgraded line will be a key part of the trans-European Rhine-Danube corridor, linking Romania with Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
