The total volume of cargo handled in Turkish ports increased by 3% in the first seven months of 2025, reaching 322.8 million tons, according to a report by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. In July, the volume of transshipment amounted to 47.67 million tons, which is 8% more than in July 2024. The leaders in cargo handling were the ports of Kocaeli and Aliaga (7.66 million tons each), Iskenderun (6.18 million tons), Tekerdağ (4.11 million tons) and Mersin (3.9 million tons), with the ten largest ports accounting for 83.4% of the total volume.
The main export commodities were Portland cement (1.08 million tons), clinker (642 thousand tons), fuel oil (606 thousand tons), diesel fuel (429 thousand tons) and feldspar (392 thousand tons). The main export destinations are Italy (1.49 million tons), the USA (1.17 million tons), Egypt (1.12 million tons), Greece (751 thousand tons) and China (652 thousand tons). Among imported cargo, the leading ones are coal (3.09 million tons), oil (2.65 million tons), scrap metal (1.66 million tons), diesel fuel (1.43 million tons) and coke (1.14 million tons).
Container handling also showed growth: 1.25 million TEU were handled in July 2025 (+14.5%), and in January-July the total volume of container cargo increased by 5% to 8.27 million TEU. Coal showed the greatest increase in July (+73.7% compared to June), while the volume of crude oil handling decreased by 8.5%.
