The Port of Klaipeda has launched one of the largest projects in its history – the development of the southern part of the water area. Technical designers are already working on engineering solutions for an area of 100 hectares, and a construction permit is expected to be received by the end of the year. The port has officially opened the acceptance of expressions of interest from local and international terminal operators, industrial developers and investors, outlining the expected commercial framework and PPP model. “The southern development is an important step for the port and the whole of Lithuania: it means new jobs, additional income and growing interest from investors. The preparation of technical design is a key and complex stage that requires comprehensive solutions and coordination of interests of many parties, for which we are fully prepared,” said Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipeda Port Authority.
The technical design package includes an entrance channel of at least 200 m in width, a turning circle, a berthing line of 1,300 m, a new underground power supply cable line, solutions in the gas pipeline security zone, as well as utilities for the container terminal, including shore power supply. The design will be prepared by Aplan together with subcontractor HaskoningDHV Nederland B.V.; the design will be completed and the construction permit will be obtained by the end of the year.
The southern extension should solve the shortage of space for further growth of the port: it will open up opportunities for new terminals, attracting foreign capital and receiving the world’s largest vessels. The project also includes a marina with up to 500 berths for small vessels, which will improve the conditions for recreational shipping in Klaipeda.
