Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into an agreement with Kinetics, a subsidiary of Turkey’s Karpowership, to jointly develop a platform for floating data centers. The partners plan to convert vessels into data centers with autonomous power supply from Karpowership’s marine power plants, as well as from land-based networks, solar stations, and offshore wind farms.

The project is aimed at rapidly growing demand for digital infrastructure. Floating data centers will offer the market rapid capacity deployment in conditions of land shortage, limited power supply, and lengthy permitting procedures typical of stationary facilities.

Kinetics CEO Mehmet Katmer noted that the combination of mobile energy and floating data centers will eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks and ensure a more flexible, faster, and greener expansion of digital capacity.
