The container terminal at the Port of Linz recorded its highest monthly throughput in May 2025, processing 24,405 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).
This volume represents the largest number of containers handled in a single month since the terminal began operations.
In the 2024 financial year, the terminal processed approximately 197,500 TEU, which corresponds to more than 1.9 million tonnes of cargo. By May 2025, the terminal had already handled over 165,000 TEU, or about 1.6 million tonnes of freight.
The terminal covers an area of approximately 120,000 square metres and serves as a key transshipment point for combined transport between inland waterway, rail, and road. Between 2019 and the end of 2022, the terminal underwent a comprehensive expansion and electrification.
As part of the infrastructure upgrades, the number of weekly train connections increased from 50 in 2024 to 66 in 2025, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 32 percent. The terminal provides direct rail connections to Hamburg, Rotterdam, Trieste, Vienna, and other destinations.
Since August 2022, the terminal has operated six fully electrified block train tracks, each up to 740 metres in length. The demolition of old warehouses expanded the container storage capacity from 4,500 TEU to approximately 6,500 TEU. The installation of a second gantry crane supported the increase in processing capacity.
The expansion project was part of the “Neuland” programme, which focuses on modernising port infrastructure. The container terminal’s extension received support from the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), covering 20 percent of the project costs. The total investment for the container terminal expansion was approximately EUR 20 million.
The project was managed by LINZ AG through its LINZ SERVICE – Port Division, supported by the internal construction management team from LINZ AG Management Service.
