According to the results of January-May 2025, the cargo turnover of Turkish ports increased by 2% compared to the same period last year and reached 230 million tons. In May, the figure increased by 4.7%, amounting to 48.16 million tons. The leaders in terms of the volume of handled cargo were the ports of Aliaga (7.83 million tons), Kocaeli (7.41 million tons), Iskenderun (6.25 million tons), Tekirdag, Ceyhan, Mersin and Ambarli. The ten largest ports accounted for 83.9% of the total monthly volume.
The bulk of exports were Portland cement (1.27 million tons), clinker, feldspar, diesel fuel and aluminum ore. The import structure was dominated by oil (2.53 million tons), anthracite, scrap metal, diesel and coking coal. Turkey’s main export destinations are Italy, the United States and Spain, while key supplier countries are Egypt, the United States, Ukraine and China.
Container shipping is also showing growth: 5.81 million TEU were handled in the country’s ports in five months, which is 3.1% more than a year earlier. In May, container turnover increased by a record 17.6% and amounted to 1.36 million TEU.
