Cargo and cruise operator MSC is showing interest in acquiring the Romanian shipyard Mangalia, previously controlled by a consortium of Damen and the state. According to local media, MSC has already held talks with the Romanian government, considering the site for the construction of cruise ships, Ro-Pax vessels and tugs.

Following Damen’s exit in 2024, the company declared bankruptcy, but in recent weeks, the shipyard has partially resumed operations – two ships have entered repairs, a third is expected, and about 800 workers have returned to their places. Despite this, Mangalia remains in a difficult financial situation: the amount of creditors’ claims reaches $ 400 million.

In addition to MSC, the Turkish shipyard Desan has also shown interest in the site, which is in talks with the authorities about the possible lease of production facilities and personnel. Founded in 1976, the Mangalia shipyard has three large dry docks and is of strategic importance for shipbuilding in the region.
