DHL Group and Scania have completed a 100-day trial of the new Erev (extended range electric vehicle) truck with an integrated fuel generator for recharging the battery. The tests took place on the route between Berlin and Hamburg, where the vehicle operated on electricity from the grid 91.9% of the time, reducing CO₂e emissions by more than 90% compared to diesel analogues.
The backup generator was only activated 8.1% of the time, demonstrating the potential of the technology as a transitional solution for long-haul transport with limited charging infrastructure. According to DHL, Erev is suitable for sustainable logistics operations today.
DHL Group CEO Tobias Meyer emphasized the need for such solutions to be recognized at the legislative level. According to him, the market should not wait for full electrification – it is important to support technologies that can already significantly reduce the carbon footprint.
