The Port of Amsterdam has seen its first-ever green methanol bunkering of a ship: Van Oord’s drillship Boreas received 500 tonnes of the green fuel from the bunkering vessel Chicago (operated by Unibarge) at TMA Logistics’ Amerikohaven terminal. The fuel was supplied by ISCC-certified OCI HyFuels, produced from sustainable sources such as waste and residual streams.
The Boreas is the largest, newest vessel in its class for offshore installations and the first to be able to run on methanol. With its emission control system and 6,000 kWh battery, the vessel significantly reduces NOₓ emissions and fuel consumption. According to Jaap de Jong, Project Director at Van Oord, the use of Boreas will be an important step in the development of offshore wind energy and the transition to renewable energy.
The Port of Amsterdam is actively developing the Multi Fuel Port concept, supporting the use of alternative fuels, from LNG and hydrogen to ammonia and methanol. According to Clean Shipping Advisor Henry van der Weide, the port is implementing safety standards, including working with the IAPH and creating special checklists for bunkering operations. This ensures the safe use of environmentally friendly solutions and moves shipping closer to zero emissions.
