The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications has signed the largest railway contract in the last 20 years with the Bulemu consortium — for the supply of 35 brand-new electric trains for the national operator. The total value of the deal exceeds 1 billion leva (around 500 million euros), with last-minute funding provided by grants under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Each train will consist of six carriages and accommodate up to 352 passengers, including 51 first-class seats. This is a large-scale investment that will cover almost two-thirds of the country’s transport needs. Deliveries will begin in August 2025.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stressed the importance of the deal, calling it a strategic step to modernize the rolling stock and improve the quality of passenger transportation.
