Two transformers with a total weight of 572 tonnes have been successfully unloaded at the Nordlandkai terminal in the Port of Lübeck – the heaviest project cargo ever handled at the port. The operation was carried out by Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG) together with the heavy-duty transport specialists Thömen Spedition (Hamburg) and Baumann Move (Bornheim). The equipment, manufactured by Hitachi Energie in Bad Honnef, was transported to Lübeck on the River Trader from Rotterdam.

A powerful 750-tonne Liebherr LG 1750 crane was used for the unloading, which took four days to assemble and four days to dismantle. The operation required great precision – the crane lifted each transformer individually, after which the demanding transport phase began. The shipment travelled to Stockelsdorf, where it will be installed at a Tennet substation as part of the East Coast Line project, which will transmit green electricity from East Holstein to southern Germany and strengthen the country’s integration into the European energy grid.
