A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has welcomed its new methanol-capable dual-fuel container ship in Singapore. The vessel, named A.P. Møller after the company’s founder Arnold Peter Møller, is the ninth methanol-capable vessel in Maersk’s fleet. The naming ceremony was conducted by Robert Uggla, Chairman of Maersk, in the presence of senior Singapore government officials, customers and employees.
Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, the A.P. Møller can carry up to 16,592 TEU. It is part of a series of 18 large methanol-capable vessels scheduled to enter service in 2024-2025. Maersk has already commissioned seven such vessels in 2024. Also in July 2023, Singapore saw the first methanol bunkering vessel for the Laura Maersk, highlighting Singapore’s importance as a key hub for alternative fuels.
These vessels are part of Maersk’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Low-emission methanol reduces greenhouse gases by 65% compared to traditional fuels. The company actively supports the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) initiatives to regulate the market to make the use of sustainable alternatives more competitive.
