Despite the decline in container traffic in the third quarter, the Port of Gothenburg expects record container throughput for 2024. Over the nine months, the volume reached 685,000 TEU, up 1% year-on-year. At the same time, the handling of full containers increased by 5%, while the handling of empty containers decreased, indicating a restoration of the balance between exports and imports.

According to Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales at the Port Authority, the close to 50/50 ratio of cargo flows, which is traditional for Gothenburg, distinguishes it from other ports in Sweden and the world. Container handling by rail increased by 7%, reaching 376,000 TEU, while ro-ro cargo volumes decreased by 4% to 389,000 units. Energy supplies increased by 17% to 16 million tonnes, thanks to the recovery from last year’s refinery maintenance.

Other segments showed a decline: passenger traffic fell by 8% to 1.16 million people, and new car turnover fell by 2% to 188,000 units due to a drop in sales in the Swedish car market. Despite the decline in some categories, Gothenburg retains its leading position in Sweden and continues to develop a balanced and sustainable transport strategy.
