The Italian government has approved funding of €206.8 million for the first phase of a container terminal in the port of Trieste, which will be able to handle up to 1.6 million TEU. The total cost of the project is approximately €315 million, with the remaining funds to be provided by investors in a public-private partnership. The new transshipment facilities will be created at the Piattaforma Logistica Trieste (PLT) terminal, part of which has been owned by the German company HHLA since 2021.

The first phase involves the construction of a 400-meter-long container berth with a capacity of up to 500,000 TEU, as well as three railway tracks of 750 meters each. In the future, the number of tracks will be increased to nine to handle up to 40 trains per day. Construction will begin in 2024, with completion scheduled for 2029. This project is part of HHLA’s strategy to strengthen its position in the South-Eastern European market.
