Four modern STS harbour cranes arrived at the T3 terminal in Baltic Hub in Gdansk on 27 October 2024. These powerful machines, fully assembled, arrived from China and are the first of seven cranes that will increase the handling capacity of Baltic Hub by 1.5 million TEU in 2025.
The residents of Gdansk were able to witness the impressive moment of the arrival of these giants from the beach in Stogi. The four cranes, loaded in Changxin, China, covered almost 29,500 kilometers in two months before reaching the port in Gdansk.
“The arrival of the huge, fully assembled STS cranes perfectly demonstrates the level of investment in T3 and brings us closer to completing the project and being ready to meet the needs of our customers in 2025. The expansion of the terminal with a third berth and storage areas will increase the handling capacity of Baltic Hub to 4.5 million TEU per year. This is an important step in developing our infrastructure and strengthening Gdansk’s position as a strategic port gateway and logistics hub in Europe,” said Charles Baker, CEO of Baltic Hub.
The new STS cranes, capable of handling the largest container ships in the world, surpass previous models in size and height. Each weighs almost 2,000 tonnes and reaches a height of 96 metres (140 metres with the boom raised), capable of lifting containers 55 metres and extending them 74 metres from the side of the vessel with a lifting capacity of up to 65 tonnes. Seven such cranes will be installed at the T3 terminal in 2025, three of which will arrive in March.
