The Port of Klaipeda is embarking on one of the largest projects in its history — the construction of a 100-hectare complex in the southern territory of the port; a construction permit has already been received. This project includes the creation of a modern marina, a children’s sailing school and infrastructure for water recreation, which will be an important step towards the development of the port and cultural traditions of Lithuania, explained Algis Latakas, Director General of the Port Authority.
The project has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, all environmental assessments have been carried out. It is planned to deepen the shipping channel to 17 meters and create a southern sea gate with a separate area for small and recreational vessels. This will also protect the ecosystem of the Curonian Lagoon and prevent changes in the salinity and temperature of the water.
The technical design of the complex includes 40 hectares of territory with a 1.3-kilometer southern and 1-kilometer northern pier, a berth for ferries and a place for kayaking equipment. The southern gate is designed for 500 small vessels from 5 to 20 meters in length. Construction will be divided into four stages, starting with the construction of the southern pier and part of the northern one.
