At the end of July and beginning of August, the ports of Riga began to receive and load local grain of the new harvest, the terminal management reports. More than 10 ships with rapeseed and 3 bulk carriers with wheat have already been dispatched. This year, Riga is actively receiving grain from both Latvian and Lithuanian farmers, although record export volumes are not expected.
According to the commercial director of WT Terminal, Janis Lapins, the season began earlier than usual: the first ship with rapeseed left the port in July. To date, the Riga terminals have processed about 30,000 tons of rapeseed from Latvia and Lithuania, as well as small volumes from Ukraine. Also, in early August, the first ship with wheat of the new harvest was loaded.
This season, 15 terminals are ready to handle grain in the port of Riga, which increases competition between operators. Striving for growth, companies are investing in the construction of new grain storage facilities and the modernization of infrastructure.
