In the first half of 2024, the total cargo turnover of Polish seaports decreased by 8.7%, amounting to 67.75 million tons. The port of Szczecin-Świnoujście handled 15.9 million tons of cargo, which is 12% less than in the same period of 2023. The main decline is due to a sharp decrease in coal transshipment by 67%, to 618 thousand tons.

The port of Gdansk also showed a decrease in cargo turnover to 38 million tons, which is 7.7% less than a year earlier. Coal transshipment volumes fell to 3.3 million tons, which is 62% lower than last year.

The main reason for the decrease in coal transshipment volumes in Polish ports was the introduction of a ban on coal imports in April 2024, which led to an overall decrease in coal imports by 63% in the first six months.
