In Klaipėda a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to advance the development of a new European rail line to the city. This memorandum was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, LTG Infra, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, and the municipalities of Klaipėda city and district. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in decision-making, focusing on determining the optimal route for the railway line.

Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis emphasized the rail line’s importance for Lithuania and the entire Baltic Sea region during a round table discussion. He stated that the project is vital for enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth. LTG Group CEO Egidijus Lazauskas announced plans for an architectural modeling study of the Lithuanian railway network, which will propose at least three route alternatives to Klaipėda, considering technological and regulatory aspects.

The urgency of this project is highlighted by its significance for the Port of Klaipėda. With the upcoming Rail Baltica railway potentially diverting cargo flows away from Klaipėda, the new rail line is crucial to maintaining the port’s competitiveness. Additionally, the recently approved Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation will connect Lithuania and the Port of Klaipėda to key European corridors, further enhancing the port’s strategic importance.
