Digital automatic coupling (DAC) heralds a new era for freight transport, revolutionizing coupling processes and paving the way for automation and digitalization in rail freight. Since 2020, rigorous testing of a digital freight train equipped with DAC has covered over 15,000 kilometers across ten European countries, marking a significant milestone in its development. Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, Member of the DB Management Board for Freight Transport and CEO of DB Cargo, proudly presented the train to key stakeholders in Brussels, emphasizing its successful completion of field tests and readiness for commercial use.
The transition to DAC aligns with broader efforts to shift more goods from road to rail, crucial for Europe’s pursuit of sustainable, green supply chains in line with climate targets. Recognizing its pivotal role, Deutsche Bahn collaborates with European freight operators and stakeholders to advance DAC deployment across the continent. At the European Commission’s “Connecting Europe Days” event, discussions underscored the importance of expanding transport corridors, enhancing climate-neutral supply chains, and financing DAC as a new standard.
DAC promises substantial benefits for customers, offering shorter journey times and enhanced operational flexibility through electronic brake control and increased compatibility with passenger transport networks. By facilitating seamless information exchange, DAC opens doors to new markets and customers, amplifying the impact of rail freight transport. With its potential to optimize efficiency and capacity while reducing environmental impact, DAC emerges as a transformative force shaping the future of rail transport in Europe.
