Expanding its European network, Metrans, the rail subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has completed the acquisition of the Adria Rail Group, operating in Serbia and Croatia. This move reinforces Metrans’ presence in South-East Europe, as Adria Rail becomes an integral part of the Metrans Group, providing rail transport services from the Adriatic region to Central and South-Eastern Europe. The acquisition enhances container transport efficiency, covering a substantial 70% of container movements to and from Serbia through Croatia. Additionally, Adria Rail manages an inland terminal near Belgrade, facilitating daily Metrans trains between this terminal and the Croatian port of Rijeka, further connecting to the Metrans hub terminal in Budapest.

Having initially acquired a 51% stake in Adria Rail Group in March 2023, Metrans has now increased its ownership to 100%. The continuous expansion of Metrans’ European network, spanning from the North Sea to the Black Sea, offers customers over 650 regular rail connections per week. Notably, Metrans prioritizes sustainability, providing CO2-free container transport through its HHLA Pure product. The commitment to climate protection includes investments in modern electric locomotives, green electricity utilization, and electric cranes at inland terminals, aligning with HHLA Group’s objective of achieving climate-neutral production by 2040.
