In collaboration with Truckparkings Rotterdam Exploitatie (TRE), the Port of Rotterdam Authority inaugurated the inaugural electric truck charging station within the port. Located at the Bodaanweg truck park in Waalhaven, this facility accommodates up to eight electric trucks simultaneously, marking a significant stride towards sustainable road transport. Recognizing that approximately 70% of regional container journeys involve short distances, the introduction of electric trucks aims to enhance environmental cleanliness and contribute to achieving CO2-neutral freight transport.

TRE, in partnership with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, spearheaded the installation of five charging points at the truck park, enabling a total of eight electric trucks to recharge. The truck parks prioritize safety and convenience, featuring 24/7 surveillance for parking and charging bays. Charging reservations are currently unnecessary, with e-trucks able to directly access charging points through the entry point intercom. Moreover, e-trucks enjoy complimentary access to all secure truck park facilities, exempt from parking fees.

This collaborative initiative at Waalhaven involved key contributors, including ABB E-mobility, Batenburg Techniek, KWS Infra, Stedin, and VARO Energy, responsible for managing the charging infrastructure. Additionally, the project aligns with the Rijkswaterstaat Living Labs Heavy Duty Charging Stations program. A recent study commissioned by the Port of Rotterdam Authority in January 2022 anticipates around 2,000 electric trucks in the port area by 2030, necessitating approximately 50 charging points. Notably, companies like Innocent Drinks, Den Hartogh, and DFDS have already embraced electric trucks in Rotterdam, emphasizing the broader shift towards sustainable transport, where hydrogen also plays a pivotal role alongside electrification.
