The inaugural methanol-powered container ship, “Ane Mærsk,” was officially christened at a ceremony held at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. Named after Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the Chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and A.P. Moller Holding, the vessel was christened by Ane’s eldest granddaughter, who broke a champagne bottle over the bow to mark the occasion.
This groundbreaking vessel is the first of Maersk’s 18 large methanol-powered ships scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025. Serving as the world’s second methanol-enabled container vessel, “Ane Mærsk” is set to commence operations on the AE7 route connecting Asia and Europe in early February. Notably, these vessels feature an industry-first design with the bridge and accommodation positioned at the front, ensuring optimal fuel efficiency and exemplifying Maersk’s commitment to pioneering low-emission shipping solutions.
Embarking on her maiden voyage fueled by green1 methanol, “Ane Mærsk” represents Maersk’s dedication to advancing sustainable shipping practices. The company is actively exploring sourcing and bunkering solutions for its entire methanol-powered fleet, underscoring its ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact in the shipping industry during the years 2024-2025.
