On December 4, 2023, PSA Sines welcomed the arrival of two massive Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, marking a significant enhancement to its container handling capabilities. These new cranes, complementing the existing ten Super Post-Panamax cranes, empower PSA Sines to efficiently manage the largest container vessels operating on the Iberian Peninsula. The addition of these cranes not only contributes to expanding PSA Sines’ capacity from 2.3 to 2.7 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) but also solidifies its status as the preferred Iberian gateway hub.

Departing from Shanghai on September 7, 2023, the new STS cranes arrived safely after a three-month sea journey. Anticipated to be operational in February 2024, the cranes will undergo six weeks of rigorous testing and commissioning. With an outreach of 24 container rows and a height of 55 meters, these cranes enable PSA Sines to handle vessels exceeding 24,000 TEUs without constraints, reinforcing its position as a leading container terminal in southern Europe. As part of its ongoing commitment to development, PSA Sines has invested over EUR 370 million in its state-of-the-art facility since the commencement of terminal construction in 2000. The ambitious Phase III expansion project, valued at over EUR 412 million, aims to accommodate increased cargo volume and meet the evolving needs of customers. Upon the completion of Phase III in 2030, the terminal’s annual handling capacity is expected to double, reaching 4.2 million TEUs and further establishing PSA Sines as a key port in the region.
