APM Terminals and DP World are joining forces in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at expediting the global decarbonization of terminals through the widespread electrification of container handling equipment (CHE). Backed by research indicating that the tipping point for battery-electric CHE can be achieved within the next 2-8 years with concerted efforts from industry stakeholders, the initiative seeks to revolutionize port operations.

The comprehensive research findings and roadmap for the electrification of CHE are detailed in an industry White Paper, gaining endorsements from key players like Eurogate, Port of Kalundborg, and Smart Freight Centre. Container handling equipment is pivotal for port operations worldwide, facilitating the movement of containers on and off ships across the 940 container ports globally. In 2020, the global fleet of CHE facilitated the transportation of 815 million TEUs, valued at USD 8.1 trillion. The current global CHE fleet, estimated at 100,000-120,000 units, contributes to 10-15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually (scope 1 and scope 2).
