Mabanaft, a leading independent energy company, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fairplay Towage Group, one of Europe’s largest tugboat operators. The agreement outlines Mabanaft’s commitment to supplying hydrogen to Fairplay Towage’s upcoming hydrogen-powered tugboats in the Port of Hamburg starting in 2025. This move reflects a joint focus on embracing new technologies and sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry, positioning hydrogen as a key contributor to the decarbonization of the shipping sector.
In addition to providing hydrogen, Mabanaft plans to develop the necessary bunkering infrastructure for Fairplay Towage’s hydrogen-powered fleet. Leveraging its role as a marine fuels supplier and operator of tank terminals in the Port of Hamburg, Mabanaft aims to diversify its marine fuels offering by incorporating hydrogen, contributing to the industry’s environmental goals. This MoU establishes a long-term strategic partnership, with Mabanaft ensuring quality, reliability, and the highest safety standards in supplying Fairplay Towage’s hydrogen needs in the Port of Hamburg.
Furthermore, Mabanaft’s announcement in November 2022 about the construction of an ammonia import terminal in the Port of Hamburg underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable energy initiatives. This terminal, a pivotal component of the New Energy Gate project, aims to facilitate the importation of substantial quantities of climate-friendly energy, solidifying Hamburg’s position as a hub for sustainable hydrogen products.
