The Barcelona Combiconnect intermodal terminal in La Llagosta, near Barcelona, has completed the final stage of construction and has entered the initial testing phase. Trial train movements will begin soon, and a fully loaded test train from Antwerp will arrive at the terminal in early January. The testing will include unloading containers and semi-trailers, loading new units, and sending the train back to Belgium.
The testing phase is aimed at verifying and fine-tuning operational and administrative processes, interactions with rail operators and customers, and preparing the terminal for a gradual increase in capacity in the coming months. The terminal is managed by Combiconnect Barcelona, a temporary joint venture between Hupac Ibérica and TPNOVA Rail & Logistics Services, which have invested approximately €20 million in the facility’s development. The project is being implemented in stages, and the completed configuration will be equipped with gantry cranes, OCR gates, and modern IT systems.
Barcelona Combiconnect is positioned as a key element of Spain’s intermodal infrastructure and a regional logistics hub for the Barcelona metropolitan area. The 105,400-square-meter terminal is designed as an interface between the Iberian and European gauges, equipped with four mixed-gauge transhipment tracks, each approximately 700 meters long, and supports the P400 profile for high-capacity intermodal transport between Spain and the rest of Europe. Services will include rail-to-road transhipment, semi-trailer parking, VGM weighing, refrigerated truck connections, empty container storage, customs and repair services, as well as cross-docking and last-mile services.
