The Port of Tallinn has received permission to operate a new multifunctional berth at Paldiski South Harbour. The facility is already ready to receive its first vessel: a large vessel carrying components for the construction of an onshore wind farm in Latvia is expected to call in the second half of February. The new 310-meter-long berth, with a 13.5-meter depth and a 10-hectare rear area, is considered unique in the Baltic region.
According to Valdo Kalm, Chairman of the Board of the Port of Tallinn, the new infrastructure, together with the Paldiski industrial park, forms a comprehensive production and logistics hub, integrating production, storage, and cargo handling. This strengthens the port’s competitive position in the Baltic Sea and creates the conditions for participation in construction and maintenance projects for both offshore and onshore wind farms. The berth is capable of accommodating specialized deep-draft vessels, and the spacious rear area allows for the pre-assembly and storage of generators and turbine blades.
The infrastructure is also designed to handle heavy military equipment from the Estonian Defence Forces and NATO allies, and, if necessary, can handle ro-ro vessels and other oversized project cargo thanks to its high load-bearing capacity. The berth was built by a consortium of Insenerehituse AS and Akciju Sabiedrība BMGS Estonian Branch. The total investment amounted to €64 million, €20 million of which was financed by the European Commission under the EstMilMob military mobility project.
