At an expanded government meeting chaired by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov presented a report on measures to develop the country’s transport and logistics infrastructure and strengthen its transit potential. He stated that by 2026, construction of two railway lines with a total length of 475 km is planned to be completed, as well as the modernization of 2,900 km of track. This will increase transit traffic by 60% and increase the average speed of transit container trains to 50 km/h.
The Prime Minister noted that by the end of the year, freight delivery times from the Chinese border to the Caspian Sea will be reduced from 84 to 55 hours. Concurrently, large-scale work is underway in the road sector: construction and reconstruction will cover 11,000 km of roads, which should increase the capacity of key transport corridors and ensure more efficient connections between regions and foreign markets.
At the same time, Olzhas Bektenov pointed out factors hindering the development of transit potential, including the high level of deterioration of the railway infrastructure. Therefore, the implementation of the comprehensive program to modernize the main railway network is under constant government supervision.
