Intermodal operator METRANS continues to expand its network into Southeastern Europe by acquiring a 50% stake in the AFLUENT Arad South terminal in western Romania. This is the company’s first intermodal terminal in the country and an important step in strengthening METRANS’s position in the region. The terminal occupies an area of approximately 3.5 hectares, expandable to 82 hectares, and provides simultaneous storage capacity of up to 750 TEUs.
Post-regulatory approvals, the terminal will be integrated into METRANS’s existing network. The company plans to launch up to three container trains per week between Budapest and Arad. This new service will allow customers from Bucharest and eastern Romania to utilize the entire rail logistics chain via Arad to METRANS’s Budapest hub in Csepel, with further access to the North Sea ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, and Rotterdam, as well as the Adriatic ports of Koper and Rijeka.
The integration of Arad South also opens up new opportunities for transportation between the hinterland of Europe and the Port of Constanta for both export and import flows. Customers will have access to METRANS’s neutral intermodal network, which includes over 20 modern inland terminals across Europe, significantly strengthening the connectivity of the Romanian market with key logistics hubs in Central and Western Europe.
