Infrastructure operator LTG Infra has finalized the design and construction process and signed a contract with the Lithuanian company UAB Tilsta. The agreement is valued at €13.9 million (including VAT). The project entails replacing the existing level crossing with a modern underpass for vehicles, ensuring safer and uninterrupted traffic flow for both local residents and transit vehicles. This project is part of the development of the Rail Baltica railway hub in Kaunas, where new infrastructure is being actively integrated into the urban environment.
Representatives from the Ministry of Transport and LTG Group state that eliminating level crossings is a mandatory standard for high-speed railways in the EU and is directly linked to enhancing transport safety and reliability. Authorities emphasize that replacing a level crossing with a bridge or underpass improves traffic flow and reduces risks on both the road and the railway. Tilsta notes that the project is technically challenging due to dense urban development and limited space; however, the company’s experience with similar projects ensures high-quality and timely execution.
Under the contract, the design phase is to be completed within one year of the agreement taking effect, with all construction work scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2028. The Kaunas hub is considered one of the most complex sections of the Rail Baltica project due to the density of existing infrastructure and the need for integration with the city’s current network. Meanwhile, LTG Infra is continuing the tendering process for other hub facilities – including the reconstruction of overpasses on Kalantos and Masiulio streets – as the Rail Baltica project remains the largest railway initiative in Baltic history and a key element in integrating the region into the European transport system.
