The Port of Shanghai increased its cargo throughput and container handling volume in the first five months of 2026.

The Port of Shanghai continues to strengthen its position as the world’s largest maritime hub, having increased its cargo throughput to 25.1 million tonnes during the January–May 2026 period. Port authority data indicates a 2.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects steady demand for maritime shipping and sustained high levels of activity in international trade.

Particularly notable growth was recorded in the container segment. In the first five months of the year, the port’s container throughput reached 23.75 million TEUs, a 6.2% increase over the figure for the same period in 2025. This rise in volume is driven by expanding exports and Shanghai’s strengthening role as a key node in global logistics chains.

For the full year of 2025, the Port of Shanghai’s total cargo throughput stood at 600 million tonnes, while container handling exceeded 55 million TEUs. These figures confirm the Chinese port’s leadership in the global market and its strategic importance to international trade, particularly along routes connecting Asia, Europe, and North America.
