Hannibal, a multimodal operator within the Contship Group, has expanded its European rail network by launching a new service connecting the RHM (Rail Hub Milano) inland terminal in Melzo, Italy, with the Europoort Rotterdam terminal in the Netherlands. This new route links one of the Port of Rotterdam’s major logistics hubs with the Italian rail hub, providing access to key transport corridors in Northern Europe.
With this new service, Hannibal has completed the expansion of its operational presence across the Port of Rotterdam’s main terminals. Through its subsidiary, the company now operates at all key port facilities – Moerdijk, RSC, Botlek, and Europoort. This offers customers a wider range of options for transshipment and cargo delivery to the UK, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Germany, and other Northern European markets.
The regular open-access rail shuttle is designed to transport semi-trailers, containers, and swap bodies. The service runs six times a week, with a capacity of up to 38 cargo units per trip. Departures from Melzo are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while departures from Europoort take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays; the transit time is approximately 24 hours. SBB acts as the transport operator. The launch of this new route brings the total number of weekly rail services between Melzo and the Netherlands to 36, reinforcing the positions of Hannibal and RHM as gateways to Northern Europe.
