Aglobis and Rhenus create supply chain to ensure stable sulphur supply in Europe.

As fossil fuel power generation in Europe declines and demand for sulphur in the chemical industry grows, Aglobis, a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and logistics operator Rhenus are launching a major project to create an efficient supply chain. Sulphur production, previously a by-product of power plants, has become an import segment, with liquid sulphur playing a key role. To meet this demand, Aglobis plans to build a sulphur processing plant with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year, scheduled to start operation in 2027.

Rhenus will provide sulphur storage and handling services at the Duisburg terminal, where 17,000 square metres have already been allocated for the project. Logistics will include bulk solid sulphur delivery, barge loading on the Rhine, processing at the plant and low-emission delivery to industrial sites in the region. Aglobis is also exploring cooperation opportunities with partners for cargo handling in ports in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Representatives of both companies note the importance of the project for the long-term support of European industry. According to Michael Petersmann, Managing Director of Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr, this project not only corresponds to the company’s core competencies, but also plays an important role in the future development of the Ruhr region.
