In Estonia, work continues to refine the route of Rail Baltica, the largest railway project in the region. Last week, the public discussion stage of the updated plan for the section in the south of Pärnu County ended. Meetings with local residents were held in Uulu, Kilingi-Nõmme and Pärnu. Although there was less interest from citizens, experts believe that this is due to the fact that most questions had already been answered in previous stages.

Among the topics discussed, much attention was paid to ecology. Residents expressed concerns about the possible impact on forests, natural areas and the use of quarries. Rail Baltica representatives explained that the corridor for the railway will be 50-70 meters wide, and in some places where additional structures are needed, it will be increased. Explanations were also given on the operation of ecoducts – special crossings for wild animals. According to experts, with proper design and support for the surrounding landscape, such structures have proven their effectiveness, which is confirmed by global and local studies.

Particular attention was paid to the protection of rare species, such as the wood grouse in Luitemaa. Although the route does not affect their main habitats, the project includes measures to restore suitable areas and prevent the isolation of the population. These steps will help preserve the ecosystem and take into account the interests of local residents concerned about deforestation.
