The HHLA container terminal in Hamburg will deploy a private 5G network to test innovations.

The Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), owned by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), will receive funding from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) for the installation of a 5G network as part of the “DigiTest” initiative. Europe’s transport sector faces crisis: bankruptcies, rising prices and new regulations.

According to the DSV report, the eurozone economy continues to struggle, including due to a sharp jump in energy prices – from 0.1% to 1.8%. This has a negative impact on the transport sector, where freight traffic has fallen, costs have risen and the number of bankruptcies has increased. In France, the number of bankrupt transport companies has increased by 37.8%, in Belgium – by 5%, and in Germany this figure has doubled.

Port of Gdansk: record cargo volumes and steady growth.

In 2024, the Port of Gdansk confirmed its status as the largest seaport in Poland, handling 77.4 million tons of cargo and receiving 3,559 commercial vessels. The company’s revenue reached a record PLN 264 million, which is 24% more than in 2023. The key growth areas were liquid fuels (+5%), general cargo (+2%) and container shipping (+10%). Excluding coal, the total transshipment volume amounted to 69.5 million tons, which is 2.8% more than last year.

AirBaltic is ready to resume flights to Ukraine at the earliest opportunity.

A meeting between Deputy Minister Sergey Derkach and the management of airBaltic was held at the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine. The visit of the Latvian carrier’s representatives, including First Vice President Tomas Ramdahl and Vice President for Network Development Mantas Vrubljauskas, was devoted to discussing the prospects for resuming flights to Ukraine. The Ambassador of Latvia to Ukraine Ilgvars Klava also took part in the negotiations.

Italy to increase funding for Ferrobonus.

Italy is preparing to significantly boost its Ferrobonus programme, increasing funding by €60 million in 2025-2026. The current plan is to allocate €22 million annually until 2026, but the government plans to add another €30 million for each of the following two years. The measure is aimed at supporting rail freight transport, in line with its strategy to reduce harmful emissions and eco-modernise the transport sector.
