Representatives of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and the European Commission met in Sofia to discuss the development of the Black Sea-Aegean Sea cross-border transport corridor, as part of a cooperation agreement signed in Brussels in December 2025. The parties discussed key infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional connectivity, including road, rail, and border crossings, as well as the synchronization of national investment plans.
For Bulgaria, a priority project is accelerating the construction of a new bridge across the Danube between Giurgiu, Romania, and Ruse, Bulgaria. At the same time, the country will complete the reconstruction of the existing Friendship Bridge between these cities by June 2026. Romania is participating in the implementation of Danube projects while simultaneously promoting other strategic initiatives, including the development of connections between Constanta and Burgas. Bulgaria also plans to build new bridges across the Danube, connecting Nikopol with Turnu Magurele and Silistra with Calarasi.
The meeting participants paid special attention to improving transport links with Greece through the modernization and construction of new border crossings. One such crossing, between Rudozem, Bulgaria, and Xanthi, Greece, was opened on January 20, 2025. The Greek side confirmed that passenger rail service between Thessaloniki and Sofia, suspended for nearly 10 years, is planned to be restored in 2027. Joint proposals from Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania for project financing will be submitted to the European Commission for review by mid-September 2026.
