The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications has approved the use of €46.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund for the implementation of the multimodal terminal project in Ruse. The total project cost is estimated at approximately €56.5 million. Construction is planned on the site of a former railway marshalling yard, near the area where a third bridge across the Danube is expected to be built, further strengthening the region’s transport role.

The project includes the construction of a new railway station with seven tracks, warehouse and administrative infrastructure, a customs post, a parking lot, and an access road from the Ruse industrial zone. Management of the future terminal is expected to be transferred to a private operator, which should improve its efficiency and attract logistics businesses.

The National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) plans to announce a tender for the terminal’s design and construction in early 2026. Ruse, home to Bulgaria’s largest port on the Danube and bordering Romania, is seen as a promising transport hub for the country’s northeast. With the modernization and expansion of the Ruse-Varna railway line, the region has significant potential for increased freight traffic along the east-west corridor.
