A new digital pass and access system was launched at the Port of Riga on November 1. Now visitors and freight transport will be able to enter the port only with prior electronic registration, with the submission and verification of documents in digital format. This replaces the previous paper process, making operations more efficient and convenient.
The joint stand of the Port of Hamburg and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai focused on the green transformation of supply chains. The Port of Hamburg’s presentation was held under the motto “Sustainability in the context of the energy transition”, reflecting the importance of international cooperation in creating more sustainable supplies. The Steering Committee of the FIN-EST Green Corridor Initiative has taken an important step in promoting carbon-neutral maritime transport in the Gulf of Finland by approving a list of 19 joint projects aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of ferry services between Finland and Estonia. The initiative was created following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2023 between Helsinki, Tallinn and key stakeholders, which formed the basis for the creation of a climate-neutral route and a maritime green corridor between Helsinki and Tallinn, as well as Vuosaari and Muuga.
On November 9, Kaspi Grain Way shipped the first batch of grain from berth No. 4 of the Kuryk port, loading 3,500 tons of products on board the SILVER STAR vessel. This event became an important step in the development of Kazakhstan’s export opportunities in the global agricultural market.
The Italian government has approved funding of €206.8 million for the first phase of a container terminal in the port of Trieste, which will be able to handle up to 1.6 million TEU. The total cost of the project is approximately €315 million, with the remaining funds to be provided by investors in a public-private partnership. The new transshipment facilities will be created at the Piattaforma Logistica Trieste (PLT) terminal, part of which has been owned by the German company HHLA since 2021.
The Hapag-Lloyd container ship Hamburg Express was christened at the Burchardkai Container Terminal in Hamburg. The ceremony was conducted by Eva Maria Tschentscher. The vessel is one of the largest in the world, along with its eleven sister ships, with a length of 400 metres and a capacity of 23,660 standard containers.
A. P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has inaugurated the Philippines’ largest Maersk Optimus distribution center in Calamba, Laguna, covering an area of 10 hectares. The ceremony was attended by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and Secretary of Trade and Industry Cristina A. Roque. The new center will be Maersk’s flagship facility in the Philippines and an important logistics hub for the Southern Luzon region.
The auction for the sale of the single property complex of the state enterprise Belgorod-Dnistrovsky Commercial Sea Port ended with a successful deal. The winner was Top-Offer LLC, which offered UAH 90 million, which is UAH 100 million lower than the starting price. According to the director of the port, Oksana Kiktenko, this was the 13th auction, after which the successful completion of privatization and a new history of the enterprise are expected.
A.P. Moller – Maersk has signed a long-term agreement with LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. for the supply of bio-methanol, which will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the company’s fleet that uses two types of fuel, including methanol. The agreement strengthens Maersk’s strategy to secure alternative fuel sources for its vessels. There are currently seven methanol-powered vessels in operation, and with the new volumes, Maersk aims to meet more than 50% of its fleet’s methanol needs by 2027.
PSA unboXed, the venture capital arm of PSA International, has partnered with Amperesand, a specialist in grid infrastructure solutions, to jointly test technologies aimed at decarbonising ports and sustainable logistics. The partnership will see a pilot project using Amperesand’s solid-state transformer (SST) technology at the Port of Singapore, which will form part of PSA’s new electric truck charging stations.
