The Ports of Gothenburg, the North Sea and the DFDS welcome the addition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to the Green Shipping Corridor, reinforcing the environmental ambitions of the project. There are plans to have two ammonia-fuelled ships operating on routes between Sweden and Belgium by 2030, which could make the corridor the world’s first environmentally friendly cargo ship route. Ports are also stepping up efforts to electrify and build ammonia fueling infrastructure.

On June 16, Maersk’s second large vessel capable of running on green methanol, Astrid Maersk, made its first stop at the port of Koper in Slovenia. Following on from the Ane Maersk, which launched earlier this year, the Astrid Maersk is an example of Maersk’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The vessel operates on route AE12, connecting Asia and Europe, arriving in Koper from Port Said, Egypt, before continuing on to Trieste, Tangier and Singapore.

In collaboration with industry partners including HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH, the University of Bremen has developed an innovative AI-enabled condition monitoring system for port vehicles as part of the research project “KISS”. This system uses advanced technologies to monitor the technical condition of vehicles in real time.

At the beginning of June, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) put the first two electric trucks into operation at its Container-Transport-Dienst GmbH (CTD). These green trucks are part of HHLA’s sustainability strategy to accelerate the decarbonization of supply chains and provide customers with greener transportation solutions.

Kyra Lemmens, Commercial Logistics Manager at the Port of Moerdijk, said that their port stands out as a multimodal hub focused primarily on maritime transport. Strategically located between the major ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, the port boasts seamless connectivity by road, rail and water transport, facilitating maritime and inland barging operations without interference from congestion, locks or tidal movements.

Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) proudly announces the maiden voyage of its two newest 24,188 TEU mega vessels, “OOCL Finland” and “OOCL Sweden.” These additions bring OOCL’s fleet of eco-friendly mega containerships to a total of ten, marking a significant advancement in the company’s fleet modernization efforts. Built by Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS) and Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS), these vessels embody the latest in sustainable maritime technology.

Baltic Hub has taken a significant step in its expansion by laying the foundation for the new T3 terminal in Poland, marking a crucial milestone towards becoming one of Europe’s largest container terminal complexes. The T3 terminal, set to feature a third deep-water quay and expanded storage yards, will solidify Baltic Hub’s status as the premier container hub in the Baltic Sea. The terminal is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025, with the complete commissioning of all equipment.

MSC has announced the launch of a new service, Britannia, which will provide enhanced port connections along a unique corridor from China and Vietnam to Liverpool.

A comprehensive plan for the development of maritime infrastructure has been adopted for 2024-2028. It provides for the creation of a large maritime transport and logistics cluster based on the ports of Aktau and Kuryk. This will increase container capacity, develop cargo transshipment terminals and improve international logistics, while reducing administrative barriers. This year, work will begin on dredging the waters of the port of Kuryk and the construction of a container hub in the port of Aktau.

In the first quarter of 2024, cargo turnover through the port of Aktau increased by 14%. The total volume of transshipment amounted to more than 1.1 million tons, including 24 thousand tons of grain and more than 920 thousand tons of oil and petroleum products.
