The total capacity of CMA CGM’s container ship fleet exceeded 4 million TEU for the first time this week, while on July 1 it was about 3.99 million TEU. The group has consistently maintained third place among the world’s container carriers, behind only MSC (6.7 million TEU) and Maersk (4.6 million TEU). Over the past 16 years, CMA CGM’s fleet has quadrupled, from the first million TEU in 2009 to more than 4 million in 2025.

The French operator has been actively developing thanks to mergers and acquisitions: key deals include the purchase of CGM (1996), ANL (1998), Delmas (2005) and American President Line (2016). CMA CGM also added a number of regional lines, including MacAndrews, Cheng Lie Navigation, OPDR, Mercosul Line and Containerships Oy, which significantly strengthened its position in various markets.

Today, CMA CGM has a fleet of 683 vessels, and its order book includes another 96 container ships with a total capacity of 1.5 million TEU. According to Alphaliner, after the introduction of all ordered ships by 2028, the French carrier has a chance to closely approach Maersk or even overtake it in the global ranking.
