German regional passenger transport operator DB Regio has launched a tender for the supply of up to 400 new electric trains for the S-Bahn network in Stuttgart, Munich and the Rhine-Main region. This is part of the S-Bahn 2029+ program, which aims to modernize urban rail systems and standardize rolling stock.
The project is planned to replace at least 300 trains, which will ensure flexibility in the transfer of rolling stock between networks, as well as the use of uniform technologies and spare parts for maintenance. The framework agreement covers not only the supply of trains, but also equipment aging management, software updates and SaaS solutions.
DB Regio plans to conclude up to three contracts with suppliers, which will be the largest S-Bahn upgrade in German agglomerations.
