On May 13, 2025, the official launch of the Piattaforma Europa project took place in the Italian port of Livorno, which will be implemented by the Belgian group DEME together with partners. The project includes large-scale dredging and coastal protection works, the construction of new breakwaters, berths with a total length of 3 km, two terminals and the expansion of the port area by 2 million square meters.

DEME will deepen the approach channel to 17 meters, and the depth of the water area and at the berths to 16 meters. 14.5 million cubic meters of soil will be excavated, which will be used to create new port sites. It is also planned to build two new breakwaters and relocate the existing Meloria. The project is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2030.

Piattaforma Europa, worth 550 million euros, will transform the port of Livorno into a strategic logistics hub for the Tuscany region. It will be able to receive large-tonnage vessels, double the current cargo turnover (more than 44 million tons per year) and improve connections with the railway and transport corridors of Central and Northern Italy, strengthening the transit potential between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
