Despite hundreds of kilometres of distance and different scales of operations, the ports of Gdansk and Hamburg are strengthening their cooperation through experience exchange and joint projects. The recent visit of the Gdansk Port delegation, led by President Dorota Pycz, to Hamburg was another step in developing a partnership whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, when both cities were members of the Hanseatic League. Today, as then, strength lies in unity, and cooperation is aimed at the benefit of the entire Baltic region.

In the context of geopolitical instability, climate challenges and technological change, both ports are becoming strategic points in Europe. They not only ensure cargo handling, but also play an important role in NATO military mobility, protecting energy and food security, and preserving digital infrastructure, including submarine internet cables. Joint work in the field of security, energy transition, automation and digitalization is becoming a prerequisite for their development.

According to Dorota Pycz, modern ports should jointly implement green technologies, exchange data in real time and create common standards. Despite competition on the European market, Gdansk and Hamburg see each other as allies in creating sustainable and flexible supply chains, as well as in creating a safe, environmentally friendly and efficiently organised maritime space in Europe.
