During Kazakhstan’s Transport Week in Almaty, the heads of Georgian and Azerbaijani railways signed a memorandum on the launch of regular container train services linking ports on the Black and Caspian Seas. The new Batumi–Poti–Tbilisi–Absheron–Sumgait–Alat route will connect the two countries’ key sea and dry ports, including the Tbilisi Multimodal Terminal, the first phase of which was commissioned in June 2025.
The project includes a terminal-to-door freight delivery service and trains operating on a fixed schedule, ensuring stability and reducing transit times. Shippers will receive advance information about container arrival and return times, increasing the transparency and convenience of the service.
The launch of the new rail service will shift the transportation of empty containers between the Black and Caspian Seas from road to rail, reducing road congestion and improving environmental sustainability. In addition, in Almaty, the heads of the railways of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line.
