Georgian Railway is expanding its container transportation services by launching a new block train from the ports of Batumi and Poti to Baku. The route will run along the Batumi–Poti–Tbilisi–Absheron–Sumgait–Alat corridor and will operate on a fixed schedule, linking Azerbaijan’s largest cargo terminals with Black Sea ports.
The agreement to launch the service was signed in Almaty. As part of the partnership with Azerbaijan Railways, shippers will be offered a simplified “terminal-to-door” service. This will ensure transparent container delivery times from Poti to Baku and expedite the return of empty containers.
The new train is expected to shift a significant portion of container traffic from road to rail, reducing road congestion and environmental impact. According to Lasha Abashidze, General Director of Georgian Railway, the service will save customers time and money, while the company will increase transportation volumes and revenue.
