HPC Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC), a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has secured the project coordination role for the “BSR Hydrogen Air Transport – Preparation of Baltic Sea Region Airports for Green Hydrogen” initiative through a European tender. This three-year EU-funded project focuses on preparing Baltic Sea Region airports for the utilization of gaseous hydrogen in small and regional aircraft and ground equipment, fostering stronger connections with existing aviation hubs. The inaugural partnership meeting recently convened in Hamburg, hosted by the project lead partner, Hamburg Airport.

Representatives from 16 project partners, including airport operators, technology firms, and research institutions from Sweden, Finland, Poland, the Baltic States, and Germany, commenced their collaboration at the invitation of Hamburg Airport. Gaseous hydrogen is identified as the future propulsion system, especially for smaller aircraft with up to 80 seats. The project, structured into three work packages, delves into preparing Baltic Sea region airports for hydrogen use, covering aspects such as hydrogen supply chain logistics, on-site storage, aircraft and ground vehicle refueling, safety-compliant handling processes, fire protection measures, legal considerations, economic viability, and business planning. The project aims to culminate in demonstration flights of a hydrogen-powered aircraft across partner airports.

HPC, with extensive experience from over 50 national and international airport projects and about 80 funding initiatives, emerged victorious in the European tender. The responsibilities encompass project coordination and ensuring the project’s successful execution in accordance with the outlined plan.
